MAMMA MIA! London Cast: Who’s Playing Donna, Sophie and the Dynamos?
Quick answer
The current London cast of MAMMA MIA! began performances at the Novello Theatre on 12 October 2026. Sara Poyzer plays Donna Sheridan, Ellie Gilbert-Grey is Sophie, and the Dynamos are Vivien Carter as Tanya and Laura Medforth as Rosie. Emma Odell plays Donna at certain performances, so check the performance details if a particular performer is important to your booking. The West End run is currently booking through 2 October 2027.
Who is in the 2026/27 London cast?
At the centre of the show is Sara Poyzer as Donna, the independent owner of a taverna on a Greek island. Ellie Gilbert-Grey plays her daughter Sophie, who is preparing for her wedding and trying to discover more about her family history. Poyzer returns to the role for this cast change, alongside Richard Standing as Sam, one of the three men who may be Sophie’s father.
Donna’s old friends and fellow Dynamos are Vivien Carter as Tanya and Laura Medforth as Rosie. The principal cast also includes Daniel Crowder as Harry, Rakesh Boury as Bill, and Kyle Cox as Sky. Natorii Illidge plays Ali, Foxy Valentine is Lisa, Edward Turner is Eddie and Charlie Garton is Pepper. Emma Odell is listed as the alternate Donna/ensemble performer and covers the role at certain performances.
The wider company includes ensemble performers and swings including Matthew Barrow, Margaret Atta, Dan Burstow, Will Forgrave, Lawrence Guntert, Erin-Sophie Halliday, Nicole Ingram, Harry Jack, Laura Jayne-Hardie, Benjamin Kempton, Deena Kapadia, Imogen Malone, David Nairne, Tom Parsons, Andy Rees, Julie Repérant, Beth Shaw, Emily Squibb, Matt Trevorrow and Ria Turner. The official London cast page includes the company’s roles and biographies.
As with any live production, the advertised cast can change because of illness, holidays or other scheduling reasons. The venue advises that it cannot guarantee the appearance of any named artist.
What is the story?
This is the stage musical rather than either film adaptation. Sophie lives with Donna on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi and is about to marry Sky. After reading Donna’s diary, Sophie invites three men from her mother’s past to the wedding, believing one of them could be her father. Their arrival brings old friendships, unfinished romances and difficult questions about identity back into Donna’s life.
The story is built around ABBA songs including “Dancing Queen”, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”, “Take a Chance on Me”, “The Winner Takes It All” and “Mamma Mia”. The production’s creative team includes book writer Catherine Johnson, director Phyllida Lloyd, choreographer Anthony Van Laast, production designer Mark Thompson, and music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. The show uses the songs to carry a story about a mother and daughter, friendship, love and the passage between generations, rather than presenting itself as an ABBA concert.
Is MAMMA MIA! suitable for you?
The official recommendation is ages five and over. Children under three are not admitted; under-16s must be accompanied by, and seated next to, an adult aged 18 or over. Everyone needs their own ticket. The production contains flashing lights, which may matter to audiences with photosensitivity.
It may suit families, multigenerational groups, ABBA fans and first-time musical-theatre visitors who want a familiar pop score and a clear, comic romantic story. It is less suitable if you are looking for a play without songs, a concert-style ABBA tribute, or a quiet, short evening. The plot includes wedding nerves, past relationships and questions around parentage, but this guide avoids its major revelations.
