West Side Story Revival Sets 2027 Dates at the National Theatre

The National Theatre has confirmed dates and ticket information for its new production of West Side Story, which will bring the landmark musical back to the London stage during its 70th-anniversary year.

The revival is currently scheduled to run in the Olivier Theatre from 11 November 2027 to 12 February 2028. Its press night will take place on 25 November, with public booking opening at 12 noon on Thursday 12 November 2026.

Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell will co-direct the production, reuniting after their staging of Death of a Salesman at the Young Vic, in the West End and on Broadway.

Based on a conception by Jerome Robbins, West Side Story has a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

Inspired by Romeo and Juliet, the musical follows Tony and Maria, who meet and fall in love as conflict intensifies between two rival New York gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Their relationship becomes increasingly dangerous as the struggle for control of their neighbourhood escalates.

The musical first opened on Broadway in 1957. Its score includes “America”, “Tonight”, “Maria”, “Somewhere”, “Cool” and “I Feel Pretty”.

Robbins’ original choreography will be reproduced and adapted for the National Theatre production by Julio Monge, who was also an artistic collaborator on Steven Spielberg’s 2021 film adaptation.

The creative team includes Miriam Buether as set designer, Nicky Gillibrand as costume designer and Nicholas Skilbeck as music supervisor. Sam Lyon-Behan is the fight director and Ingrid Mackinnon is the intimacy director, with casting by Bryony Jarvis-Taylor and Naomi Downham.

Mumba Dodwell joins as associate director, alongside associate choreographer Luca Dinardo and associate conductor Cat Beveridge.

Casting has not yet been announced, leaving the actors who will play Tony, Maria and the members of the Jets and Sharks to be revealed later.

Tickets currently range from £30 to £146, with prices subject to change according to demand. A £4 fee applies to online and telephone orders, although National Theatre members and some other customers are exempt.

The £30 seats are limited to two per customer, with up to two additional tickets available when booking for children under 18.

A limited allocation of reduced-price preview tickets will be released in spring 2027, initially to National Theatre members. The theatre has also reserved 10,000 tickets exclusively for audiences aged between 16 and 25.

Priority booking begins at 12 noon on 4 November 2026 for selected patrons and higher-level supporters. Member and Member Plus booking opens at midday on 6 November, followed by public booking on 12 November.

West Side Story will play in the Olivier Theatre at the National Theatre, Upper Ground, South Bank, London SE1 9PX. Waterloo, London Blackfriars and Embankment are among the nearest stations.

Captioned, BSL-interpreted, audio-described and relaxed performances are included in the current schedule. The National Theatre also advises that latecomers may not be admitted.

Dates, casting announcements, access information and current ticket availability can be found on the official National Theatre production page.
