The Menier Chocolate Factory is set to stage a major revival of Peter Shaffer's landmark psychological thriller Equus in 2026, featuring an exceptional cast led by acclaimed actors Toby Stephens, Amanda Abbington, and rising talent Noah Valentine. This co-production with Theatre Royal Bath Productions will run from 8 May to 4 July 2026 at the Menier, before transferring to Theatre Royal Bath from 14 to 25 July 2026.
The Principal Cast
Toby Stephens as Dr. Martin Dysart
Leading the production is Toby Stephens, youngest son of acting legends Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Robert Stephens, who takes on the complex role of psychiatrist Dr. Martin Dysart. Known for his acclaimed performances in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Die Another Day, and numerous stage productions, Stephens brings gravitas and depth to the challenging central role of the psychiatrist tasked with treating a disturbed young patient.
Noah Valentine as Alan Strang
Playing the enigmatic 17-year-old Alan Strang is Noah Valentine, whose portrayal of the troubled youth who blinds six horses in an inexplicable act of violence forms the emotional core of the play. The character's pathological religious fascination with horses and his complex psychological trauma present a demanding role for this talented performer.
Amanda Abbington as Hesther Salomon
Joining the production is Amanda Abbington, celebrated for her roles in Sherlock, Mr. Selfridge, and her recent work in (This is not a) Happy Room at King's Head Theatre. She plays Hesther Salomon, the magistrate who brings Alan's case to Dr. Dysart's attention.

About Equus
Written by Peter Shaffer, one of Britain's most decorated dramatists (whose works include Amadeus, Lettice and Lovage, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, and Five Finger Exercise), Equus is a multi-award-winning psychological thriller that has achieved the status of a modern masterpiece since its premiere. The play poses a profound question: what prompts a 17-year-old boy to blind six horses? This is the challenge presented to psychiatrist Martin Dysart as he delves into the psyche of his young patient Alan Strang. As Dysart searches for answers, he begins to question the nature of his own life and confronts a troubling dilemma: is "curing" the boy's pathological passion a more dangerous act than the crime itself? Through its exploration of faith, passion, normality, and the cost of conformity, Equus examines the fundamental questions of what it means to be human and whether psychological "normality" is always preferable to passionate, if destructive, belief.
